Missouri prosecutor Eric Zahnd was found dead inside the Platte County Courthouse on September 17, bringing an abrupt and tragic end to nearly 24 years of public service.
Zahnd, 53, had served as Platte County’s prosecuting attorney since taking office in January 2003. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his death and launched an investigation at the courthouse, which was cleared and closed Thursday afternoon. Authorities said there was no threat to the public.
The New York Post reported that Zahnd died by apparent suicide inside the courthouse. Local officials had not initially released specific details about the circumstances of his death, and the sheriff’s investigation remained ongoing.
Zahnd had announced in April that he planned to leave office when his term ended on December 31. At the time, he reflected on his long career, saying the job had brought him both “great joy” and “considerable pain.”
During his years as prosecutor, Zahnd was involved in several major criminal cases and efforts to change Missouri law. He pushed for the state’s Jessica’s Law and helped develop legislation involving repeat drunk drivers and the recording of interrogations in dangerous felony cases. He was also named Missouri’s Prosecutor of the Year in 2014.
News of his death prompted condolences from Missouri officials and prosecutors across the Kansas City region. Gov. Mike Kehoe called it a tremendous loss, while Attorney General Catherine Hanaway described Zahnd as a public servant who cared deeply about his community.
Zahnd is survived by his wife, Tracy, and their two sons, Benjamin and Luke. His death came less than four months before his planned departure from the prosecutor’s office.
The sheriff’s investigation into Zahnd’s death is continuing, and officials have not publicly released further details about what happened inside the courthouse.
