A 17-year-old student stabbed her teacher inside a classroom after receiving a graded mathematics exam, with the attack captured on video.
The incident happened Sept. 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School in Cametá, Brazil. Video from the classroom shows the student standing near teacher Betânia de Almeida’s desk before suddenly pulling out a hunting knife and lunging at her. Almeida tried to defend herself and wrestle the weapon away as the struggle continued.
The teacher was injured during the attack and managed to escape the classroom, with the student following behind her. Almeida was taken to Cametá Regional Hospital, where she received stitches. A CT scan reportedly showed that the stab wound had not damaged any of her organs, and she was later discharged.
According to a Pará Civil Police report, the student was arrested at the scene. Police said she told officers that she attacked Almeida because she disliked her. A family member later told Brazilian news outlet G1 that the teacher had just finished grading the student's test before the attack.
Because the student is a minor, Brazilian law treats the case differently from an adult criminal prosecution. A local lawyer told The Post that she could face a “socio-educational measure” for an offense comparable to attempted homicide.
The Union of Public Education Workers of Pará condemned the attack and called for a full investigation.
