Race to rescue thousands feared buried alive after back-to-back earthquakes as death toll hits 920

The deadly twin earthquakes could see the death toll soar as a frantic rescue mission is underway.

Two powerful earthquakes, just 39 seconds apart, have given rise to a major disaster that leveled hundreds of buildings, leaving thousands of residents buried alive under the rubble.

The official death toll has gone up to nearly 920 people, with officials issuing a warning that the number is expected to climb as the search effort keep on increasing. Nearly 3000 to 4000 people were confirmed injured.

Regions such as La Guaira are now facing major destruction, with limited access hindering the initial deployment of heavy equipment. Moreover, rescuers are working with emergency responders as desperate family members continue to claw through collapsed concrete and debris in a race against the clock to pull survivors from the ruins.

The twin disasters have just overwhelmed local structures so much that a major humanitarian mission is on the rise to try and reach trapped victims in a race against time.
