A Cessna 172 light aircraft that departed from Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York experienced an in-flight problem late on Monday evening and was therefore forced to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River near Newburgh, just south of the Newburgh Beacon Bridge.
The incident took place at about 8 pm local time after the plane lost power while flying towards the Stewart International Airport region.
Despite crashing into the icy river waters, both the pilot and a single passenger survived. They were both able to exit the plane and swim to shore before getting rescued by emergency responders. Both were also evaluated by medical personnel and treated for minor injuries, and officials claim they are both expected to make a full recovery.
Local authorities, including the fire departments, police, and the Coast Guard, responded to the scene to secure the area and assist in this rescue.
The FAA is currently investigating the loss of power that led to this crash. As per NY's governor, this was another miracle on the Hudson, which was in reference to the famous emergency water landing on the Hudson River in the year 2009, where all aboard managed to survive.
