The government of the United Kingdom has refused to enable a special request that was recently made to enable American forces to make use of UK airbases.
This includes the RAF Fairford in England and the joint UK-US base on Diego Garcia for possible military air strikes against Iran.
British officials were seen speaking about how they were very concerned about the matter and participating in such an attack might go about violating international law.
At the same time, officials spoke about concerns about exposing the UK to legal and diplomatic backlash. The decision aligned with the emphasis by London on diplomatic and legal approaches to the escalating tensions with Tehran, instead of direct involvement of the military.
In reaction, the US President was said to be very upset with the call, slamming the decision made by the UK government sharply, and linking this to his withdrawal of support for the controversial Chagos Islands deal. This is an agreement that would allow the transfer of sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius while keeping long-term military access.
