The Trump administration has shared that it's putting an end to the large-scale federal immigration enforcement campaign, dubbed Operation Metro Surge, in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.
The latest operation deployed thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and other federal agents to the area, starting in December of 2025. The stated goal was to target undocumented immigrants believed to serve as a major public safety risk.
Officials further claimed that the surge gave rise to more than 4000 arrests and claimed that Minnesota has become less of a sanctuary state for criminals.
Border czar Tom Homan mentioned how President Trump agreed to conclude the mission and that most personnel would be returning to regular assignments or be assigned somewhere else.
A small residual federal presence would continue to wrap up all the operations and respond to ongoing challenges.
This campaign started to become very controversial amid widespread protests, accusations of overreach, and fatal shootings of American citizens by federal agents, which drew national outrage.
