Five climbers from Bosnia were reportedly found dead on Russia's Mount Elbrus after a violent storm forced their group to stray from their intended hiking route.
Mount Elbrus is Europe's highest peak and is located just north of the border with Georgia.
All five deceased individuals were believed to be residents of Zenica, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. The group included a married couple and a local hospital doctor. Out of the seven-member expedition, two climbers ended up surviving. The expedition leader managed to descend to get assistance after two members fell sick at an altitude of 5100 meters. Rescuers successfully evacuated the second survivor for medical care.
The team managed to summit the mountain in good weather on Friday. But a sudden and violent blizzard struck the following evening with winds up to 70 km/h, causing a complete whiteout that forced them off-route.
