Right after Egypt's dramatic 3-2 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Egyptian camp expressed deep frustration over refereeing decisions, with some going so far as to call the match rigged. Others called it the most corrupt tournament in history, with some urging the FIFA President to step down.
Egypt really worked hard and was given plenty of decisions by the VAR that it dubbed as unfair or cheating. They argued that alleged external pressure was applied to keep Lionel Messi and the reigning champions in the tournament.
