Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Officially Determined After Weeks of Investigation

Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death has officially been determined more than a month after the actress died at age 36.

According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina, Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Her death was ruled accidental.

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville on August 16 after a 911 call reported a cardiac arrest. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. The coroner’s office said her autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.

The toxicology findings included fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, along with alprazolam, the generic form of Xanax, methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine. The report also identified 4-ANPP, a chemical associated with fentanyl production.

Panettiere was known for starring roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville” and had spoken publicly about her past struggles with addiction. She also discussed those experiences in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”

Although the coroner has determined her cause and manner of death, Greenville police said their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains active. Authorities previously said there were no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
