A 5-year-old girl who had just finished trick-or-treating was among at least 124 people shot across the United States during Halloween weekend, as shootings erupted in cities across the country.
The child was playing in a back room of her Detroit home while still wearing her Halloween costume when a bullet fired from outside struck her in the chest, according to police.

She reportedly cried out to her mother, saying she thought she had been shot. Her mother rushed her to get medical attention, and officials later said the girl was in stable condition. No arrests had been announced in that case at the time of reporting.

The incident was one of many shootings reported during the Halloween festivities. According to law enforcement figures cited in the report, at least 124 people were shot in incidents across at least 15 cities, with 17 people losing their lives.
The violence affected Halloween parties, street celebrations, college areas and even a costume store.
In Dallas, three separate shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district left four people dead and 15 others wounded. In Delaware, two Halloween-night shootings left a 17-year-old girl dead and several others injured.

A shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, also killed a 31-year-old pregnant woman and injured six others.
Authorities in several communities continued investigating the incidents, while some cases had already led to arrests.
The weekend's violence prompted renewed concern from officials, including Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer, who said gun violence should never be accepted as part of everyday life.
