Mother and Daughter Disappear During a Walk. Days Later, Both Are Found Dead in Suspected Grizzly Attack

A mother and her 20-year-old daughter have been found dead after going missing during what their family described as a casual walk. Authorities believe a grizzly bear may have been involved in the fatal incident.

The victims were identified as 48-year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed. Their family reported them missing on Sunday, November 1, after they failed to return from a walk the previous afternoon.

The pair had gone to the Snooka West Trail area, a familiar place that was only a short drive from their home. According to relatives, they regularly enjoyed outdoor activities together.

Search teams discovered Balcarras' remains on Monday, November 2. The search continued until Tuesday afternoon, when Reed was also found dead.

Family members described the mother and daughter as extremely close. Balcarras worked as an art therapist and was a mother of four, while Reed was remembered as a gentle young woman who loved ballet, art and hiking.

British Columbia's Conservation Officer Service said evidence suggested a bear may have been involved. However, investigators have not confirmed how many bears may have participated in the attack.

Officers are working to locate and capture any bears involved. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the trail area while the investigation continues.

The deaths have devastated the family and shocked the local community, particularly because the walk took place on a trail the two women knew well.

Loved ones have also started a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and support the family during this difficult time.
