A woman and her baby passed away after a boat carrying 14 people capsized near the Statue of Liberty on Saturday night.
As per authorities, the incident triggered a multiagency search for the victims in the busy waters of New York Harbor. The boat's captain was identified as 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez, who was arrested early on Sunday and then charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment, as per the NYPD.
The US Coast Guard is now investigating what caused the boat to capsize and whether the vessel was operating illegally as an uncredentialed charter, as per the agency. The investigation is now being carried out with the Coast Guard Investigative Service and the NYPD.
