At least five people have been found dead, and 41 are missing after an Indonesian ferry carrying close to 250 people caught fire while it was at sea.
The ship's captain reported the fire and requested help off Madura Island as the vessel sailed from the country's second biggest city, Surabaya in East Java, to South Sulawesi.
Footage shared online showed how large numbers of passengers in life jackets were panicking and asking for help as they remained stranded at sea on what appeared to be a lifeboat.
Other clips showed people climbing down from the ferry that had flames and plumes of smoke coming from the top of the vessel.
Basarnas posted a video to its account on TikTok with a statement that shared how rescue officials received data that a passenger ship was on fire. The boat was engulfed in flames as passengers held on to the ship's bridge and bow while awaiting rescue.
