The controversial Lincoln Memorial Pool is again making headlines, and this time around, it's thanks to health experts.
The pool is said to be facing a serious algae crisis just a few days after the $14M renovation project was finished in June of this year. While the Trump administration blamed this sudden outbreak on vandals who slashed the pool's lining and dumped fertilizer into it, the matter seems to be much more serious than just that.
The incident did raise the alarm and led to extra protective measures in the pool's surroundings, but the scorching summer heat is not bringing good news, experts shared. They claim it all has to do with natural factors impacting the pool and its contents.
Ecologists shared how the pool's shallow and still water, fixed with high temperatures, is setting up to be the most ideal breeding ground for green colored algae. This current bloom might transition into a much more dangerous blue-green algae called cyanobacteria. It gives rise to toxins that would soon get aerosolized and pose a major public health hazard.
