A young child's remarkable journey is going viral on social media after her loved ones shared the little moments that led to her miracle treatment.
A toddler from Florida named Irie made history in medicine as she became the first pediatric patient in the state to get a Berlin Heart EXCOR mechanical device as her bridge to transplant. This was all done under an FDA study.
Doctors made it very clear to her parents that she needed a critical heart transplant to survive after her rare but very complex heart defect that she was born with. Furthermore, her condition required her loved ones to relocate on an urgent basis to attain life-saving care.
Despite that, her health journey was never easy. She contracted a nearly fatal condition called an aspergillus fungal infection. As a whole, she bravely endured four open-heart surgeries, months of getting intubed, and even receiving 19 chest tubes before getting discharged. Today, she's a happy and energetic child and is celebrating her major milestone with her loved ones that managed to create a new world around her hospital stays and visits.
