One mistake too many is what applies to the high-profile case involving 'Hell on Wheels' killer Mackenzie Shirilla.
She was convicted of murder and sentenced to nearly 15 years in prison. But her latest bid for a new trial was officially rejected by the Supreme Court of Ohio, which chose to uphold her conviction and sentencing.
In August of 2023, the judge found her guilty of four counts of murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, and even felonious assault. Her crime included intentionally accelerating her Toyota Camry to nearly 100 mph and crashing it right inside a brick building in Ohio.
The high-speed impact resulted in the death of two people. But now, a major mistake by her own legal team has failed to secure her a new trial. They tried to argue that her initial attorneys failed to investigate the matter properly, as she had a medical condition called POTS that resulted in the blackout.
A past post-conviction relief petition was dismissed by the lower courts as it was handed in one day later than the statutory deadline. Now, the Ohio court refuses to accept jurisdiction to review the case again.
