My Mother-in-Law Has a Key to Our House and Shows Up Unannounced. How Do I Stop This?

My husband and I have been married for three years, and for the most part our relationship is great. The only issue causing serious tension in our marriage is my mother-in-law.

A few months after we got married, my husband gave his mother a spare key to our house. At the time, I didn't think much about it. He said it was only for emergencies, and I agreed. Unfortunately, what started as an emergency backup quickly became something else.

My mother-in-law now lets herself into our home whenever she wants. Sometimes she comes by while we're at work. Other times she arrives early on weekend mornings and walks straight in without knocking. Once, I came out of the shower and found her sitting in my kitchen drinking coffee as if she lived there.

The worst part is that she doesn't seem to think she's doing anything wrong. She says she's "just helping." She has folded our laundry, reorganized our pantry, and even moved furniture around because she thought it looked better.

I tried talking to my husband about it several times. He agrees that it's a little annoying, but he insists that his mother means well. Whenever I bring up changing the locks or asking for the key back, he says I'm overreacting.

Last week things reached a breaking point. My husband and I had planned a quiet anniversary dinner at home. Halfway through the evening, the front door opened and in walked my mother-in-law carrying leftovers she wanted us to try. She had no idea she was interrupting a special occasion because she never called first.

I was polite, but after she left, I told my husband that something has to change. I don't feel comfortable in my own home anymore. Instead of understanding, he accused me of trying to push his mother out of his life.

Now I feel stuck. I don't hate my mother-in-law, and I don't want family drama. I simply want privacy and basic boundaries. Our home should feel like our space, not an extension of hers.

Am I being unreasonable for wanting her to call before visiting and return the spare key, or is this a boundary that every married couple deserves to have?
