The cause of the devastating Titan submersible implosion that killed five people was just revealed in a final, damning report.
The report arrives after careful evaluation from the US Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which both exposed the critical engineering faults and failures that gave rise to this Titan submersible's implosion in June of 2023.
Firstly, the carbon fiber hull was flawed as it was not designed from steel or titanium, which is a common practice seen in classic deep-sea vessels. Therefore, the physical properties of the carbon fiber cylinder were found to be improperly validated before use, and therefore didn't meet the deep-sea pressures and theoretical design limits.
The carbon fiber material suffered from delamination, which is internal tearing with every single deep dive cycle. As a result, its pressure tolerance was reduced with time.
OceanGate skipped the industry-standard safety and pressure testing on the finished hull, leaving them unaware of the real and degraded breaking point.
