British vascular surgeon Andrew Neil Hopper was jailed for 32 months and struck off the medical register after deliberately freezing his own legs using dry ice to satisfy an amputation fetish.
He falsely collected $470,000 in insurance payouts by stating that he lost both of his legs due to sepsis, which is a lie that he went on to repeat on TV interviews. The bizarre details of this case unfolding have left many people stunned.
The surgeon was said to be working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he intentionally froze his lower legs by using dry ice. The tissue damage was so serious that doctors had no choice but to perform amputations below the knee. He carried on with the lies to get money from insurance claims and gain public sympathy.
But that did not last long as the Metropolitan Police were able to reveal the truth through a long investigation.
