The Maldives scuba diving tragedy was considered to be the deadliest in the country's history, and that deepened on the funeral day of University of Genoa marine biology professor Monica Montefalcone and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal.
It was shared how the marine biologist was very familiar with diving and extreme depths, and even published multiple scientific papers detailing sediment collections at depths of 210 and 270 feet. This very elite level of expertise has left many with even more serious questions about how this tragedy was allowed to happen in the first place.
After all, they were an experienced team, and it didn't make sense as to why they would enter a dangerous pitch-black cave network without any proper technical gear.
