A group of five Italians who passed away while deep-sea diving in the Maldives last week might have been sucked into the underwater cave by a current, an expert shared.
The group, including a mother and a daughter, had attempted to explore at a depth of nearly 165ft in the Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, but they never resurfaced again.
Maldavian authorities are now investigating several possible factors behind this accident, including the possibility of the divers descending far deeper than anticipated.
Among the theories that have emerged, experts are talking about the possibility that these divers were sucked into the cave by a strong freak current.
As per the president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, the five divers could have been pulled into the crevice by a major current called the Venturi effect.
This results when flowing water enters a narrow choke point, forcing it to speed up, which creates major suction.
