A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 has struck off the coast of the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi, north of Tokyo, prompting the government to issue an emergency warning to people in five prefectures.
The authorities in the country rate the earthquake today as a 5 on its 1 -7 intensity scale, but mentioned how there was no real risk of a tsunami right now.
A high-speed railway line between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori stations was suspended following this incident, as per the operator JR East, but there have yet to be any immediate reports of injuries or damage, as per the Japan Times.
The US Geological Survey mentioned more about how the earthquake's epicenter was 50km east of the town of Ofunto and revised the magnitude of the quake from 6.6 to 6.7.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has more information about how the quake had a relatively large depth of around 50km.
In the cities of Tome, Osaki, and Ishinomaki in the Miyagi prefecture, the quake also registered as a lower 5 on the Japanese scale.
