Two people were killed and a 7-year-old girl was hospitalized after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on crash on a California highway late Friday night.
The collision happened around 10:35 p.m. on September 16 on the 241 Toll Road in Lake Forest, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities said a Honda SUV was traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a BMW sedan.
Both drivers died at the scene. The woman driving the Honda was identified as 57-year-old Norma Herrera of Irvine, while the BMW driver was identified as 39-year-old Joseph Kyle Massey of Rancho Santa Margarita, according to the Orange County Register.
A 7-year-old girl was riding in the BMW and was taken to a hospital following the crash. Her current condition has not been released, leaving her family waiting for further information.
The circumstances that led to the Honda traveling in the wrong direction remain unclear. Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
The collision is now under investigation as authorities work to piece together what happened in the moments before the two vehicles met on the highway.
The crash has left two families dealing with the deaths of their loved ones, while the young girl remains hospitalized following the violent impact. Authorities have not yet released additional information about her injuries or when she may be released from the hospital.
