At least 11 climbers have died and six others remain missing after a powerful avalanche struck a large group of mountaineers during a guided trip.
The group of 33 climbers was caught by the avalanche on Thursday while climbing Mount Mizhirg. Six people were also injured, while 10 others were able to make their way down the mountain on their own.
A large search and rescue operation was launched after the disaster. More than 50 rescuers have been involved in the effort, but the difficult mountain terrain has made the operation extremely challenging.
Rescuers have also had to deal with the possibility of additional avalanches, making it dangerous to reach parts of the affected area. A team was waiting for helicopter support to continue the search when weather conditions allowed.
The avalanche struck during a scheduled climb of one of the highest peaks in the region. Mount Mizhirgi rises more than 16,000 feet above sea level, creating harsh conditions for anyone working at high altitude.
The search has continued as families wait for information about those who remain missing. Rescue teams are working to locate the six unaccounted-for climbers while authorities investigate what led to the deadly avalanche.
An investigation has been opened by the local prosecutor’s office. Officials have not yet publicly announced a final explanation for why the avalanche occurred.
With difficult weather and unstable conditions still affecting the mountain, rescuers face a race against time to find any remaining survivors.
