New video has captured the terrifying moments after an Amazon cargo plane crashed at a major U.S. airport, showing firefighters racing to rescue people trapped inside the burning aircraft.
The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air for Amazon Prime Air, overran a runway at Miami International Airport shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The plane crossed the runway area, struck multiple vehicles and came to rest near the airport before flames and thick black smoke began pouring from the aircraft.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and around 200 firefighters responded to the scene. Crews faced a complicated rescue operation as the aircraft burned and several people were trapped.
New footage shows firefighters using a ladder to reach the cockpit, where the pilot and co-pilot were trapped. Rescuers worked through the aircraft's window to help get them out as other firefighters battled the flames around the plane.
The crash was deadly. Five people were killed, while five others were hospitalized with injuries. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, all five people who died were inside a cleaning company's van that was struck by the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB are investigating what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway. Investigators are examining whether the plane touched down too far along the runway and why the pilots did not go around.
The crash also caused major disruption at Miami International Airport, with more than 160 flights canceled and hundreds more delayed as emergency crews responded and investigators began examining the scene.
