At least 27 people were killed and seven others injured after a minibus taxi carrying churchgoers collided head-on with a haulage truck.
The crash happened Friday night, along the Harare-Masvingo Road near Chivhu. The minibus, a Nissan Caravan, was carrying members of the African Apostolic Church, a popular Christian denomination, when it collided with a Volvo haulage truck.
Police said the crash happened at around 8:30 p.m. local time near Makumimavi Primary School. The number of passengers in either vehicle was not immediately known.
According to police, the truck was allegedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the collision occurred. The impact killed 27 people and left seven others injured.
The victims were reportedly traveling for a church-related conference. The identities of those killed had not yet been released in the initial reports.
The deadly collision has drawn attention to road safety, where serious traffic crashes continue to claim large numbers of lives.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what happened immediately before the truck crossed into the path of the minibus.
