An Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles and bursting into flames in a dramatic incident that temporarily shut down the major U.S. airport.
The Boeing 767, operating as Amazon Prime Air Flight 7598, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, at around 2 p.m. when it went beyond the runway and came to a stop near a roadway. The aircraft struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway, according to officials.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the plane caught fire, with heavy flames and thick black smoke visible from the scene. More than 60 emergency-response units were dispatched as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and assess those affected.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a full ground stop at the airport while first responders assessed the scene. All runways and taxiways were temporarily closed, causing significant disruptions for travelers and raising the possibility of widespread delays and cancellations.
At the time of the initial reports, officials had not released confirmed details about the number or severity of injuries, and the cause of the runway overrun remained under investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the incident as authorities began working to determine what caused the aircraft to leave the runway.
The airport later began moving toward reduced operations, but travelers were warned to expect disruptions as the investigation and emergency response continued.
