A married couple on a family holiday were found dead at a luxury rental property after their teenage children discovered their bodies near a hot tub.
Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 48, were staying at a holiday villa in Cullera, near Valencia, Spain, when the tragedy occurred on Aug. 24. Their children, aged 14 and 16, later discovered their parents in the spa area.
Authorities have ruled out foul play, but the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation. Preliminary findings have pointed toward a possible problem involving the hot tub’s water circulation system.
Investigators are examining the possibility of “suction entrapment,” a rare situation in which powerful suction from a drain or circulation system can trap a person underwater. Initial findings reportedly indicated that Patrick may have become trapped, while Thomasina may have attempted to help him.
However, officials have not yet established the exact sequence of events. Local police reportedly ruled out drowning as the formal cause of death, instead describing the deaths as a cardiopulmonary incident associated with extreme physical stress.
Other possibilities, including a mechanical fault, electrocution or toxic fumes, have also been examined as part of the investigation. Toxicology and other tests are still being carried out.
The company connected to the hot tub has disputed suggestions that its equipment could normally cause such an incident, saying its systems include safety measures designed to prevent dangerous suction.
The deaths have left the couple’s family and friends mourning their sudden loss, while authorities continue working to determine exactly what happened during their final hours at the villa.
