Italy's Tommaso Giacomel was forced to withdraw from the men's 15 km start race at this year's Milan-Corina Winter Olympics while he was leading.
This is after suddenly struggling to breathe and feeling like his body stopped working in a proper manner during the middle of the race.
He later described how the experience was a totally terrifying one, while keeping his fans updated on social media.
Things reportedly got so out of control that he had to have an immediate life-saving heart surgery, and he also mentioned the feeling of being emotionally frustrated by having to abandon the entire event.
After being rushed to a nearby hospital in Milan, he had to undergo a series of medical checks that initially seemed to be normal. But when he underwent the specialized tests, the truth was revealed.
Doctors performed a cardiac ablation procedure, and the operation was said to be successful. Therefore, he is now in the recovery phase that requires bed rest, and therefore, his hopes of competing further this year are no longer present.
