A powerful avalanche struck the backcountry terrain near Castle Park north of Lake Tahoe, California, on Tuesday.
The horrifying disaster left at least eight people dead, with one person still reported missing and presumed dead.
The victims were said to be a part of the guided three-day ski tour that was organized by Blackbird Mountain Guides.
The group entailed eleven clients and four experienced guides, whereby search teams later located six survivors, some of them having minor injuries. Authorities shared more about how most of the deceased were women, many of whom happened to be mothers on a ski trip together.
They were said to be connected socially through their kids' ski activities.
Survivors were seen alerting the rescuers using an SOS feature and had already found several victims before the help arrived.
