Western sources have ended their investigation of the Air India flight AI-171 crash.
According to reports from local media outlets, the crash that took place in June 2025 was said to have been caused by the pilot deliberately turning off the fuel control switches, shutting down both engines, right after takeoff.
Speaking to Italian media sources, the Western aviation sources mentioned how they thoroughly analyzed the cockpit voice recordings and flight data, but there was no evidence of any kind of technical defect.
The only plausible explanation was human intervention, almost certainly intentional. These accounts pointed towards Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, whose actions led to the fatal loss of thrust, but no official report has yet been filed or concluded his intent.
Investigators stated that they're still busy finishing the formal crash report, and it's not clear how explicitly they would be assigning the blame or motive.
Before, a preliminary investigation showed that both fuel control switches moved from RUN to CUTOFF. This cut the fuel flow and led to engine shutdowns. Even in the cockpit audio, the co-pilot can be heard asking the pilot why he did this, and he replied by stating that he did not do so.
