Tragic reports have confirmed that at least 39 people were killed and many more were injured after two high-speed passenger trains derailed after colliding with one another in Southern Spain.
The incident took place on Sunday evening in the country's Adamuz, Cordoba province. Sources from local media outlets shared more about how it happened on a stretch of track that was used by trains between major cities when a high-speed device traveled from Malaga to Madrid.
The train left the rail line and crossed onto an adjacent track, where it ended up striking a second high-speed train headed from Madrid to Huelva.
The massive impact forced both trains off the tracks and left their carriages severely damaged. The driver of one of those trains was also reported to be among those killed in the tragedy.
Authorities have confirmed that dozens of passengers were injured, with some seriously hurt and rushed to nearby hospitals.
Meanwhile, others remained trapped inside the wreckage for hours as emergency teams worked all through the night to reach them. Local volunteers and support groups were also seen taking part in the rescue efforts.
