After Republicans suffered major losses across the country, Trump finally addressed the election results. His first explanation caught attention, but what he said next was just as unexpected.

President Donald Trump has responded after Republicans suffered major defeats in the 2026 midterm elections, with Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress and flipping several key races.

In his first reaction on Truth Social, Trump suggested the outcome would have been different if he had personally appeared on the ballot.

"I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" he wrote.

The president also addressed the results in interviews, admitting he was surprised by the scale of the Democratic victories.

"I thought we would do better," Trump told.

Republicans lost several closely watched contests, including Senate races in Texas and South Carolina. Trump's endorsed candidates Ken Paxton and Darline Graham were among those defeated. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa also defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the governor's race.

Trump pointed to several possible reasons for the losses, including candidates who failed to attract enough support and the impact of higher gas prices linked to the war with Iran. He also criticized Fox News over its election coverage.

Despite the setbacks, Trump said he was prepared to accept the results and work with Democrats.

"I am absolutely willing to accept those results," he told The New York Times, adding that he looked forward to working with the opposing party.

However, he also warned that he could use his presidential veto power against legislation he disagrees with.

The results mark a significant change in Washington's political balance, leaving Democrats in control of Congress for the remaining two years of Trump's presidency.
