A married couple lost their lives after a devastating fire tore through their three-story home, while two firefighters were injured trying to battle the flames. The deadly blaze left the couple’s family heartbroken as investigators began working to determine what caused the fire.

The victims were identified as John and Tanya Poteat. The fire broke out in the early hours of October 20, when emergency crews responded to reports of a residential fire with people trapped inside. By the time firefighters arrived, flames had spread throughout all three stories of the home.
Firefighters initially attempted to enter the burning building to reach anyone trapped inside. However, the extreme heat and concerns about the structure’s stability forced them to withdraw. A second attempt was also unsuccessful after the upper floors began collapsing, making it too dangerous for crews to continue entering the home.

Fire crews then focused on attacking the flames from outside. After the fire was brought under control, responders located two deceased people inside the residence. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries during the operation and were taken to hospitals for treatment. Both were subsequently released.

The couple’s family is struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Tanya’s sister, Sharon Osburn, expressed her grief in an emotional interview, while the couple’s daughter remembered them as loving people who cared deeply about their family and others around them.
The fire also caused damage to neighboring properties, adding to the impact on the surrounding community.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet established what sparked the fire, leaving the couple’s loved ones waiting for answers after a devastating loss.
