Following the sudden death of actor Sam Neill due to pneumonia at the age of 78, medical experts are urging families to recognize a frequently overlooked symptom in older adults.
This includes confusion or sudden mental changes as well as high fever and serious coughing in older individuals, especially those with compromised immune systems. They often exhibit very different warning signs.
As per medical experts, a fever is absent in 25% to 55% of elderly pneumonia cases. Instead, a sudden drop in oxygen levels usually manifests as cognitive changes or disorientation.
The tragedy also highlights a crucial medical reality linked to cancer recovery. While Neill had successfully recovered from the rare blood cancer, his therapy had weakened his immune system, making him more susceptible to infections.
