In this specified episode, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emily D'Arcy) successfully reclaimed the position of King's Landing and the Iron Throne. Her bloodless capture of the Red Keep was only made possible after Alicent Hightower cleared the passage by tricking Aemond into flying to Harrenhal. While Alicent tried to flee the capital with Halaena and her child, they were captured and forced to return to the castle.
After arriving, Alicent found that her dad, who was revealed as a captive in the second season finale, had been brought to the dungeons as a present for Daemon Matt from Lord Larys. Moreover, Daemon was the one who pressured Rhaenyra to execute Otto. He felt that her decision would define her role and didn't want that to happen.
Fans were not anticipating this twist, and many were left stunned at the decision.
