Now, nearly 17 years after his death, he's being hailed in his latest biopic documenting his turbulent childhood, those vibrant early years with the Jackson 5, and his subsequent success as a solo artist.
His movie is released across cinemas in the US and UK, and will be subject to two-hour celebrations of these incredible life moments. But many can't help but wonder why his image was cleaned or sanitized to such an extent that it failed to hint at the long list of child abuse allegations and the public trial he had to face.
