‘Megaquake’ fears after powerful 7.7-magnitude tremor sparks tsunami warning and mass evacuations from coasts

A powerful earthquake has sparked serious fears about a huge earthquake that might rock Japan, as thousands have been ordered to evacuate fast.

The earthquake triggered a major tsunami warning with swells of up to 10ft expected as per the country's Meteorological Agency.

Officials have now warned of a serious megaquake, which is a major tremor that is caused by a smaller earthquake. The chances of earthquakes being 8.0 magnitude or higher have rocketed and will remain high for the entire next week, as warned by the country's government.

The last time that the island was rocked by such a megaquake, scaling up to a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, was in the year 2011. This caused a serious nuclear meltdown and killed nearly 20,000 individuals.

Japan's Prime Minister mentioned more about how residents need to carry emergency supplies for a week to maintain readiness in case a megaquake does hit.
