A former fire captain in California was sentenced following the August 2025 murder of his fiancée and her son that arose after an argument that they had over how a firefighter was shown in a film that they watched together.

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office shared more in a press release about how the 47-year-old killer would be serving two consecutive terms of life without any kind of parole, as well as a life term.

During that time, McFarlin was working with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as per a media release from the past.

He was the agency's captain, where he had been employed since the year 2000. He was fired after his arrest. Sources shared how he was fuming at the way the firefighter was portrayed and therefore chose to let out his anger by killing his own family.
