A Florida woman learned today that her husband had cheated on her, and that led to a years-long challenging journey with several cancers.
Eilieen McGill Fox, who was a school teacher and mother of four, shared how she found out that her husband of three decades was unfaithful to her.
Fox immediately visited a nearby health care clinic for fast STI screening as she feared for the worst and was relieved to learn that she tested negative for syphilis, HIV, and gonorrhea.
However, just one year later, during a routine pap smear, Fox found out that she had HPV, which is an STI that isn't screened for in basic STI examinations.
The virus put her at a high risk for cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, throat, and anus. Fox ended up getting diagnosed with vulvular cancer in February of 2019, then cervical cancer soon after, and she was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2023. She was later told by doctors that HPV and her later cancers were preventable with the HPV vaccine, which protects against this HPV infection that causes the majority of HPV related cancers.
