The federal government is making big plans to register eligible men for the military draft starting in December of this year.
The news was shared as part of a proposed rule published late last week. The Selective Service System submitted the automatic registration rule change to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30.

Congress then went on to approve the automatic registration for the draft last year as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. They must pass the legislation that controls funding for military personnel and operations.
This change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources, the post read.

The agency noted on the website how SSS would implement the change by December of this year resulting in a streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment.
