A jury from Hamilton County in Ohio has just granted a major win to a mother regarding the death of her newborn, which arose after her employer denied her request to work from home.
The verdict was shared yesterday through a press release for the family, which granted her a major $22.5 million in damages regarding this ordeal.
The case arises from certain events in February of 2021, when Chelsea Walsh underwent some pregnancy-linked procedures that classified her as high risk.
Her doctors instructed her that she limit her activity and remain in bed for a long period of time and to opt to work from home.
Walsh then issued a work-related permission request to her boss, but that was denied. She was told to complete leave paperwork and faced a choice between working in the office or taking unpaid leave and losing out on income and health benefits.
She had no choice but to go back to work as she couldn't afford to pay any more losses after the delivery. In the days that followed, she was put on leave against her wishes and her request for work from home was denied. Soon, she experienced complications and had to be admitted to the hospital where she gave birth to her daughter at 20 weeks and six days of gestation. However, her daughter died an hour later.
