Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew attention during Friday’s 25th anniversary 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero.
The two New York Democrats were attending the solemn event as victims’ names were being read during the annual remembrance. During part of the ceremony, cameras captured AOC and Mamdani smiling and appearing to laugh as they stood together. The brief moment quickly spread online and prompted criticism from political figures and commentators who viewed it as inappropriate for such a somber occasion.
The reaction was particularly strong because the ceremony was marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Families of the victims gathered at the memorial to read the names of their loved ones, while officials and former presidents attended the commemoration.
Mamdani’s attendance had already been surrounded by controversy. Some 9/11 victims’ families had urged him not to attend the Ground Zero ceremony, while critics had questioned his presence because of comments he made during his political career and the fact that he is New York City’s first Muslim mayor.
At the same time, the short video does not establish what prompted the interaction between AOC and Mamdani. A former Giuliani aide who attended the ceremony defended the pair, saying the clip lacked context and that other attendees were also seen speaking and smiling during the lengthy event.
Mamdani had previously said the anniversary should focus on remembering those who were killed and supporting their families rather than political disputes.
The brief exchange has nevertheless become one of the more discussed moments from this year’s 9/11 commemoration, with the debate continuing online over what viewers saw and what it meant.
