The Lindsay Clancy murder trial took a disturbing turn after a juror reportedly used an exercise band to reenact the strangling of her three children during jury deliberations.
Nick Dargie, one of the jurors who later spoke publicly about the case, said he was shocked when the lone holdout juror took an exercise band from a bag, wrapped it around a water bottle and pulled on it.
Dargie said the band was the same type of exercise band that had been used in the deaths of Clancy’s three children. He described the reenactment as inappropriate and said he questioned the juror about why he was doing it.
The shocking incident happened as the jury struggled to reach a unanimous decision in Clancy’s murder trial. The jury ultimately became deadlocked, with 11 jurors reportedly favoring a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity and one juror refusing to agree.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, admitted to killing her three children in January 2023 but argued that she was not criminally responsible because she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time.
After more than a month of testimony and weeks of proceedings, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Jurors had also raised concerns about the holdout’s behavior during deliberations, saying he was not properly considering the evidence or following the judge’s instructions. Clancy’s attorney asked for the juror to be removed, but the judge declined.
Clancy remains in a psychiatric hospital, and prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek a new trial. A hearing is scheduled for September 29.
