After 73 years of marriage, a Texas couple died on the same day, just hours apart, leaving their family grieving while also finding comfort in the way their long love story came to an end.
Carol and JoAnn VanZandt, longtime residents of Mount Vernon, Texas, died on Saturday, August 29, at their home. Both died of natural causes, according to their family.
Carol died early that morning, followed less than 12 hours later by his wife, JoAnn. Their daughter, Toni VanZandt, described the timing as bittersweet, saying it was comforting for the family to know that her parents remained together rather than one having to face life without the other.
The couple had been married since 1953 and spent more than seven decades building a life together. In the early years of their marriage, they enjoyed rodeos, trail rides and camping. Carol was also a bull rider. Later in life, the couple enjoyed playing golf and spending time with their growing family.
Carol served in the U.S. Army before eventually retiring from what is now known as American Electric Power. JoAnn worked in the local district clerk’s office.
The couple leaves behind three children, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Their family held a joint funeral service on September 3, bringing loved ones together to remember a couple whose 73-year marriage remained at the center of their lives until the very end.
For their family, the loss is deeply painful, but the fact that Carol and JoAnn died within hours of one another has also become a source of comfort.
