Adam Ghekiere, the husband of one of the eight victims killed in Montana's devastating family shooting, is speaking out for the first time after losing his wife, Megan, and her extended family in the attack. Ghekiere was working as an airport rescue firefighter at the time and was not home when the shooting unfolded.
The gunman, identified as 44-year-old Alan Smith, killed his own grandmother, his parents, his younger sister Megan, and four children before setting the house on fire and turning the gun on himself.
Smith had recently been asked to move out of his parents' home after living with them for years, according to Brad Ireland, the former husband of Megan Ghekiere and father of two of the children killed.
Family friend Jennifer Mercer, who set up a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs, revealed that it was Megan's eldest daughter who called 911 during the attack, desperately trying to get help for her family.
"She tried to save her family," Mercer said, adding that the young girl lived by her favorite quote: "I love you more."
Firefighters say their response was hampered by a limited number of nearby hydrants, allowing the flames to spread rapidly before the family could be reached. Officials say it could take days to determine the full timeline of what happened that night, as investigators continue working to piece together the tragedy that tore an entire family apart in a matter of minutes.
