Starting January 1, 2026, South Korea is making major changes to its entry procedures, streamlining the immigration process for travelers. Three key updates promise faster, smoother arrivals at Incheon Airport (ICN).
Smart Entry Service (SES) Expansion
SES, the automated facial recognition system, is now available to more countries beyond the previous US, Japan, and Australia. Travelers from EU Schengen countries, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, and others can now skip traditional passport checks. At Incheon, eligible travelers simply scan their passport, complete a quick facial recognition, and receive a printed gate pass. Average processing time drops from over five minutes to just 30 seconds, making it ideal for travelers with tight connections or long flights. Eligibility is updated monthly on the Korea Immigration website.
e-Arrival Card Replaces Paper Forms
Paper arrival cards are officially discontinued. All travelers (except K-ETA holders and Korean residents) must complete the e-Arrival Card online at e-arrivalcard.go.kr at least 72 hours before arrival. The process takes about five minutes and requires passport details, hotel address, travel dates, and basic health questions. Once submitted, travelers receive a QR code to present at immigration. Children under 14 require a parent to submit the card. A screenshot of the confirmation is recommended, as airport WiFi may be unreliable.
K-ETA Exemption Extended
The K-ETA pre-authorization requirement is waived for 22 visa-free countries until December 31, 2026. This includes the US, Canada, UK, Australia, EU27 countries, Singapore, and Taiwan. Travelers from these countries now only need a valid passport and a completed e-Arrival Card. This extension is designed to support tourism recovery and will revert to the standard K-ETA process after 2026.
