Beginning in late April and continuing through the warmer months, the program invites residents and visitors to enjoy reading in unique outdoor environments across the city. Instead of visiting traditional indoor libraries, people can sit under the open sky at Seoul Plaza, relax beside the flowing water of Cheonggyecheon Stream, or explore book-filled cultural zones at Gwanghwamun Square.
Organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Library, the outdoor library initiative was designed to expand reading beyond buildings and bring literature closer to everyday urban life. The spaces allow visitors to freely browse books while enjoying a calm atmosphere surrounded by nature and city landmarks at the same time.
Over the past few years, the outdoor library has grown into one of Seoul’s signature seasonal cultural programs. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has attracted more than 8 million visitors, showing its popularity among both locals and travelers looking for relaxing experiences in the capital.
The program also goes beyond reading. Many locations host small concerts, cultural performances, and evening screenings that transform the reading areas into lively community spaces after sunset. Nighttime sessions with lantern-style lighting and music-themed programs create a particularly memorable atmosphere during the spring season.
Each venue offers a slightly different experience. Seoul Plaza is often described as the “living room of the city,” welcoming families and office workers, while Gwanghwamun Square provides a peaceful retreat surrounded by historic landmarks.
