BTS returns as seven in historic Gwanghwamun comeback performance

Global K-pop group BTS made a powerful return as a full seven-member team with a landmark comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Square, marking their first major group stage appearance in several years.

The concert, titled BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang, followed the release of their new studio album Arirang on March 20, 2026. It represented the group’s first full-group activity after members completed South Korea’s mandatory military service, making the moment especially meaningful for fans who had waited years for their reunion.

Held at one of Seoul’s most symbolic public landmarks, the performance transformed the historic square into a global cultural stage. Tens of thousands gathered in the area, including about 22,000 fans inside the designated viewing zone, while many more watched from nearby streets and screens set up around the venue.

The event was streamed worldwide via Netflix, allowing audiences across more than 190 countries to join the celebration remotely. This global broadcast highlighted the scale of BTS’ international reach and the significance of their return to live performance as a complete group.

The concert introduced several tracks from Arirang, an album inspired by Korea’s iconic folk song of the same name. The title reflects themes of reunion and shared identity, which resonated strongly with fans after the group’s hiatus.

Beyond music, the choice of Gwanghwamun Square added symbolic meaning to the performance. Located near Gyeongbokgung Palace, the square represents both Korea’s historical heritage and its modern civic life. Hosting the comeback concert there connected the group’s return with a broader cultural message about continuity and renewal.

Fans from across the world traveled to Seoul to witness the moment in person. Many described the performance as more than a concert — it felt like a reunion between the group and their global fan community after several years apart.

With their chemistry unchanged and their stage presence intact, the performance signaled the beginning of a new chapter for BTS. Rather than simply marking a return, the historic Gwanghwamun concert showed how the group continues to connect Korean cultural identity with global audiences through music.
