Seventeen Just Announced Their Sixth Unit — and This One Is Going to Sound Different

Seventeen has always operated differently from most K-pop groups. Thirteen members, three sub-units, almost entirely self-produced — the group built its identity around the idea that the members weren't just performers but actual creators of their own music. That creative model extends to their unit projects too, and the latest one is coming this summer.

Vernon and The8 are forming a new duo unit with a joint album targeting a June release, according to a music industry source. Both members are actively involved in production — which, for Seventeen, is the standard rather than the exception.

This marks Seventeen's sixth unit project overall. Previous units include BSS (DK, Hoshi, and Seungkwan), the Jeonghan and Wonwoo pairing, Hoshi and Woozi, S.Coups and Mingyu, and DK and Seungkwan. Each unit has developed its own distinct sound and aesthetic, and the Vernon-The8 combination is already generating genuine curiosity among fans — because on paper, these two don't have the most obvious overlap.

Vernon is a rapper, Korean-American, and has been writing and composing songs since Seventeen's debut. Last year he joined the Recording Academy — the organization behind the Grammy Awards — as a voting member, a recognition of his standing as a serious music contributor rather than just a performer. The8 is Chinese, known primarily for his dance skills, and has released several solo records in China including the EP "Stardust." The two have worked together before — Vernon contributed lyrics and composition to "Orbit," the lead track from The8's solo album.

That prior collaboration is probably the clearest signal of what this unit might sound like. "Orbit" leaned atmospheric and experimental — not the kind of track that fits neatly into a category. If Vernon and The8 are building on that creative chemistry, the June album could end up being one of the more interesting releases in Seventeen's unit discography.

For now, both members are wrapping up Seventeen's "New_" world tour, which holds encore concerts at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium on April 4 and 5. The unit album comes after that.

Seventeen fans — CARATs — are already doing what they do best: speculating loudly about the concept, the sound, and whether June can come any faster.
